NASCAR Camping World West Series

My son and I spent the day out at the Miller Motorsports Park watching the NASCAR Camping World West Series and CruiserFest '09.  We were bouncing all around, checking out the Karting, the Museum, the Off Road Course (where CruiserFest was held) and of course the NASCAR racing. Not only did we see some great racing, but we also saw some pretty cool cars off of the track too.  One cool thing that happened was once CruiserFest was over we were walking back to the van and a gentleman asked how far we were walking.  We told him and he asked if we'd ride his scooter back to his motor home for him, so he didn't have to come back down and pick it up.  So my son and I got to ride his scooter for a bit and his motor home (seen in background of the photo of the side view GT below) was right near our van, so it all worked out really nicely for us. It was a lot of fun and we had a great time.

Worst Nightmare...

I always worry that things like this are going to happen when we are leaving not only church but any parking lot.  It's why I may at times seem really strict or tough on my kids, when in parking lots or in areas where there are lots of dangers to them.  I don't want anything to happen to them and if that means that I need be neurotic and keep track of them every move, then that's what I'm going to have to do. Don't get my wrong, my heart goes out to this family and I am in no way criticizing them or anyone involved.  It's just things like this that serve as a reminder to me that I need to be ever vigilant with my own children, even if that means sounding like a task master sometimes.

The dilemma...

So the U.S. Government has presented me (and many of you) with an offer that is rather tempting.  The question is, do I want to take advantage. Later this week, the guidelines for the Car Allowance Rebate System or C.A.R.S system will be officially published and new car dealers all around the country will begin accepting vehicles on the program. My dilemma is this.  I own a truck that qualifies for the $4,500 rebate.  I also own another vehicle that if I sold it, traded in the truck, and took advantage of a couple of other deals available to me I could get a brand new vehicle for nothing or next to nothing.  We would have one less vehicle in the driveway and with this deal it may be entirely possible for us to not have a payment at all on a brand new car. As it is, we have twice as many vehicles as we do drivers around here anyway.  The truck is old and lately has been taking quite a bit in maintenance costs.  On the flip side, it's been very handy to have the truck around and let's face it, I'm a guy and it's a truck. I keep mulling it over in my head and I'm not sure what to do.  I guess it all boils down to 1) Do I really "Need" a truck and 2) Do I need a new vehicle, but if I decide to do it now is the time because I'm not going to get $4,500 for this truck ever again.

Mass Transit...

A few weeks ago I noticed a few signs for bus stops in my neighborhood.  Shortly thereafter I noticed the buses running down through the neighborhood. I can see where they serve a purpose, but I'm not very excited for them to be in the neighborhood.  Mainly because those buses are significantly larger than my children and are now sharing the same roads with them. Thankfully, they are still a couple of blocks away, but I suspect that in the next few years they will be within a few houses of our place. Maybe it's time to move to the sticks.
